What No One Tells You About Beginning a Faith Journey

"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?"

Isaiah 43:19

No one tells you that beginning is boring in stretches. That between the moment you decided and the moment you feel different, there are weeks that feel like ordinary Tuesdays.

No one tells you that the loudest resistance will come from inside your own head, in a voice that sounds exactly like reasonableness. You will hear things like, You are being extreme. You are being naive. You are performing for an audience of one. Some of that voice is your history. Some of it is your protection. None of it is God.

No one tells you that you will have to grieve the version of you who was not on this road. She had faster answers and cleaner opinions. She is not coming with you, and that is a loss even when it is a gain.

No one tells you that community will be strange for a while. Not everyone in your life will want the quieter, less reactive, more discerning version of you. Some of them will miss the friend who used to bond with them over complaint. That is not a betrayal on their part. It is only information about which relationships had complaint as their main ingredient.

No one tells you that faith at the beginning feels more like a decision than a feeling. You will not always feel it. You will keep showing up anyway. That is not fake faith. That is real faith. Feelings will meet you on the road.

And no one tells you that the smallest, most unglamorous acts — a five-minute Bible read, a whispered prayer in the kitchen, a journal you almost skipped — are the ones that will build you. Not the mountaintop weekend. The Tuesday.

"A real beginning is quieter than a caption. It is a woman deciding, on a Tuesday, to keep going."
