Gathered, Not Scattered

“How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings.”

Matthew 23:37

Scattered is not a character flaw. It is a description of where your attention is currently living: everywhere except with you.

You know the feeling. You are technically present — in the meeting, at the table, in the pew — and simultaneously running four background processes: an unresolved conversation, a worry about money, a task you forgot, and a low hum of something you cannot name. Nothing gets your whole self, including you.

We usually treat this as a productivity problem and reach for a productivity fix. But scattering is rarely about time management. It is about having too many open loops and no place to set them down.

The image Jesus chose

He did not say he wanted to organize them. He said gather — the way a hen brings chicks in under her, not to control them but because weather is coming and they are too far apart to protect.

Gathering is a protective act. Pulling yourself in is not shrinking your life. It is bringing the parts of you close enough together that something can cover them all at once.

What actually gathers a mind

  • Writing every open loop down in one place. Scattered attention is mostly the fear of forgetting something.
  • Reducing the number of things that are 'in progress' — not the number of things on the list.
  • One fixed, boring anchor in the day that does not move: same chair, same time, same fifteen minutes.
  • Answering the question 'what is actually mine to carry today?' and letting the rest wait in writing.
  • Saying it out loud to God in plain speech, which is less a technique than a place to put it.

Gathering is daily, not once

You will not gather yourself permanently. A hen does this constantly; chicks wander by design. The goal is not a mind that never scatters. It is a woman who notices the scattering sooner and knows the way back in.

“You do not have to be collected. You have to be gatherable.”

That is the whole month in a sentence. Gathering is not a personality. It is a returning, done often, in October and every month after it.
